GUWAHATI: Former Assam chief minister and Congress veteran Tarun Gogoi on Friday said that an alternative political party had become a necessity to oust BJP from Assam.
“A political party has become a necessity now to punish BJP. We are not selfishly looking after our own interests because a new political party might inflict some damage on our party as well. We are trying to protect the interests of the people of Assam,” the three-time former CM said.
The call for a new political party to push BJP out has been gaining momentum among anti-citizenship law protesters ever since the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) made such a proposition recently.
In 2016, people had voted out Gogoi and Congress after three consecutive terms.
Meanwhile, the Centre has scaled down Tarun Gogoi’s security cover from ‘Z plus’ to ‘Z’ category. In 2016 Gogoi’s ‘Z Plus’ security with NSG protection was brought down to ‘Z plus’ with CRPF cover. Gogoi was given NSG cover in 2006.
“I am not surprised. I know they (BJP) have changed the security level because I have been criticizing them. There can be no other reason,” Gogoi said.
