Coventry is a city boasting an enviable amount of eating out and takeaway options - but is there room for more?

The city centre in particular is welcoming more and more big names to open its doors to serve up their fare to those who live in, work in and visit Coventry.

However, it appears not every box is ticked on our culinary  kaleidoscope of options. We asked followers of our CoventryLive Facebook page for suggestions of which food outlets you would like to see open ion the city. Hundreds of you obliged making more than 50 different recommendations!

Here's the top three outlets/types of eatery you would like to see open in the city...

3. Taco Bell

There is demand for a Taco Bell in Coventry

Arriba! Since the 1960s the American chain has been serving up Mexican inspired food including tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and nachos. But if you fancy a Taco Bell on these shores and live in Coventry, your nearest outlet is in Nottingham - one of 43 it has in England.

2. Turtle Bay

Work progresses on behind Cathedral Lanes where Turtle Bay will be situated

The Caribbean inspired restaurant and bar  has outlets in Birmingham and Leamington - but is yet to open its doors in Coventry. Hopes were heightened that the purveyors of curry goat, roti rolls and the vegan motherclucker burgers would be opening next to the Slug and Lettuce on the old Coventry Cross site.

CoventryLive reported in May 2019 that work was 'progressing well' with construction work starting, however, the doors are yet to open and soul food be served to hungry diners in the city.

1. Five Guys

Five Guys

There's seven Five Guys in the West Midlands - with four being located in Birmingham alone and another in Solihull.

Five Guys boast 250,000 ways to order a burger, offering toppings such as grilled mushrooms, pickles and jalapeno peppers. Their own website menu carries complimentary comments from celebrity chefs Heston Blumenthal and Marcus Wearing. They're clearly doing something right.

Back in October 2018 we asked what  restaurants people would like in Catherdral Lanes, offering six different options in a poll. 48 per cent of the vote went to Five Guys - but a new decade is here and they still haven't obliged and pitched up in the city.

Honourable mentions...

Other outlets people suggested included:

  • Tim Hortons
  • Wendys
  • O'Tacos
  • IHOP
  • Yo Sushi!
  • Ask Italian
  • Bubba Gump Shrimp Co
  • Franco Manca Pizza
  • Pret A Manger
  • Taybarns
  • ZAAP Thai restaurant.

The type of food that achieved the most mentions was fish and chips, but our Coventry Live Facebook page did specify what would you like to see come to Coventry (not specifically the city centre) - and we've got plenty of those already.

Another key theme was a number of people yearning for something independent, 'non-chain' celebrating the good work of local chefs and produce.
