LUCKNOW: Patients requiring lung surgeries will soon have a special 30-bed unit with a dedicated operating theatre at Shatabdi (Phase 2) hospital at
KGMU. Managed by the thoracic and
vascular surgery division, the unit will offer treatment options to lung patients with tumours,
pleural effusion (excess fluid build-up in
pleural cavity), empyema (pus collection), chest injuries, pulmonary blebs (blisters) and cancer, among others.
Professor Shailendra Yadav of general surgery, who will hold additional charge of the special unit, said the idea was to ease the rush. "Every week, we see 30-40 patients in the OPD who require immediate surgery. However, most of them are referred to other places owing to dearth of beds and OTs. The new unit will ease this problem," he said.
