PATNA: A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped several times by the ‘maulvi’ of a madrassa in Sheikhpura district, police said on Monday.
The incident came to light when the girl refused to go to the madrassa for studies. Asked by her family members to explain the reason for her refusal to go the madrassa, the girl broke down narrated the ordeal she had to undergo for the last six months.
On Monday, the girl’s family members reached the women’s police station and lodged a complaint against the maulvi, identified as Sar-e-Dur Rahman.
Sheikhpura SP Daya Shankar said the girl’s statement was recorded and a case under Section 376 of IPC and relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012 was lodged against the accused, stated to be a native of Barhara village under the Ramgarh police station area in neighbouring Lakhisarai district.
The SP said a special team has been set up to conduct raids at the hideouts of the accused, who is absconding. “He has stopped coming to the madrassa where he used to teach students,” he said, adding that a team has also been dispatched to Lakhisarai. SHO of Sheikhpura women’s police station Yashoda Kumari said the survivor and her minor brother used to take lessons from the maulvi at the madrassa.
“About six months ago, the maulvi lured the girl and raped her for the first time. Since then, she was subjected to sexual abuse several times,” the SHO said, adding that the girl’s medical examination will be conducted and her statement recorded in a local court.
Meanwhile, the girl’s family has apprehended threat to their lives. “The supporters of the maulvi have threatened us with dire consequences for lodging police complaint,” they told the local police.

It may be recalled that another maulvi of a mosque was arrested last year at a village under the Sakra police station area in Muzaffarpur district on charges of raping a minor girl, who later became pregnant and delivered a male baby. An FIR was lodged against the accused, Maulana Maqbool and his assistant, Md Shoaib, with the Katra police station.
