The Russians behind the hacking during the 2016 U.S. election campaign have hacked a Ukrainian company that's at the center of President Donald Trump's impeachment, a U.S. cybersecurity company said.
Officials with Area One Security allege that Russians hacked Ukranian gas company Burisma Holdings. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, sat on the board of Burisma.
According to Area One Security, Russian military agents launched an online campaign to steal the login information of people who work for Burisma.
It is not clear what the hackers were looking for or what information they acquired, officials said.
New Hampshire state Sen. Jon Morgan, D-Brentwood, who works for Area One Security, said this might suggest Russians are looking to spread false information again.
“What they’re really trying to do is obtain significant amounts of information and then leak that information over the course of the 2020 election,” Morgan said. “It’s a very similar process to what they followed over the 2016 election, and so, we’re just kind of seeing history repeat itself here again, sadly.”
Morgan said the hackers were successful by setting up what appeared to be legitimate websites.
Trump has been accused of abusing his power by restricting military aid to Ukraine in an effort to coerce the country into investigating Burisma. The House impeached Trump in December on articles alleging abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
