Police say a probe is on to ascertain the identity of the woman seen in the grab
NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has accepted a complaint from Komal Sharma, a 20-year-old Delhi University student, who has accused a TV channel of allegedly “defaming and identifying her as one of the attackers in the violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University” on January 5. While approaching NCW on Wednesday, Sharma also claimed that she had not been approached by the media company to confirm its information.
TOI had reported that the woman was identified by a television channel after a sting conducted by it appeared to show her admitting to her involvement in the mob attack on students and teachers of JNU.
The channel claimed that in a mobile phone photo of the violence in the university campus, Sharma could be seen holding a stick but had her face masked with a blue scarf. Based on the claims made by the TV channel, the student, who is believed to be a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, was asked by Delhi Police to join the probe into the events of January 5.
While identifying her, the TV channel had played an audio clip purportedly of Sharma admitting that the mobile phone shots of her had gone viral. She was then identified by another student of her DU college, who claimed Sharma was her junior in school. The sting also showed her pleading with the senior student not to disclose her identity.
The senior student has not yet stepped forward to confirm that the conversation between Sharma and her actually took place. The cops will probe this as well.
Police have not named the woman, though it said it had sought the video from the TV channel and will scan it to establish the person’s identity. The video aired by the news channel will also be sent for forensic analysis.
