Mumbai: Grant Road bridge shut for 6 months from Thursday

The corroded British-era Frere road overbridge (ROB) at Grant Road, that connects Lamington Road (DB Marg) to Nana Chowk, will be shut for traffic from January 16 as Western Railway commences regirdiring work.

MUMBAI: The corroded British-era Frere road overbridge (ROB) at Grant Road, that connects Lamington Road (DB Marg) to Nana Chowk, will be shut for traffic from January 16 as Western Railway commences regirdiring work.
The traffic police gave the bridge closure a go-ahead on Tuesday and issued diversions for vehicular traffic. The repair work is likely to take six months and will hit traffic in south Mumbai.
"Both arms of Frere bridge will remain shut for vehicles," said a policeman. Heavy vehicles moving from Maulana Shaukat Ali Road and DB Marg (E) towards Nana Chowk Junction will be diverted on Kennedy bridge at Opera House Junction or Diana bridge at Patthe Bapurao Marg or Bellasis bridge at Mumbai Central.
Heavy vehicles moving from Nana Chowk Junction towards Maulana Shaukat Ali Road and DB Marg (E) will be diverted on Kennedy bridge at Nana Chowk or Diana bridge at Patthe Bapurao Marg or Bellasis bridge at Tardeo circle Junction. The estimated cost of regirdiring is Rs 9.6 crore, WR said. The Frere bridge was built in 1921.
