Ontario was hit with a significant amount of snowfall Friday to Saturday, resulting in road closures and less than ideal travel conditions into Sunday.

Two collisions were reported to the Greater Sudbury Police Service during that time, but police said only one could be attributed to the poor conditions of inner-city roads.

Winter weather resulted in the temporary closure of Highway 101 between Foleyet and Wawa; Highway 129 from Highway 101 near Chapleau to Highway 17 near Thessalon, and Highway 17 from Wawa to Batchawana Bay. All of which have been reopened.

Highway 17 from Wawa to Sault Ste. Marie was also closed for an extended period of time Saturday into Sunday morning, in response to poor weather conditions and multiple collisions.

East Algoma OPP Const. Huckson said that although they had yet to calculate a total number of collisions that occurred during that time, she can confirm that there were no major injuries or fatalities.

There was also a collision between two transport trucks on Highway 11, north of Englehart, that resulted in minor injuries to passengers but no obstruction to the flow of traffic.

Greater Sudbury received around 12 cm of snowfall from Friday to Saturday, as reported by the Sudbury Airport and published in a weather summary by Environment Canada

This puts Sudbury on the lower end of the total snowfall recorded throughout Ontario, which ranges from 10.6 cm in Sault Ste. Marie, to 23 cm at Lake Superior Provincial Park.

Two recording stations actually broke the record for the most snowfall in a day. The first being the Ottawa Airport, which reported 14.3 cm of snowfall Saturday, and the Toronto Pearson Airport that recorded 17.2 cm.

The peak wind gust was recorded in Port Colborne at 94 km/h.
