GAYA: The much-delayed Magadh University Students’ Union elections will be held on March 6.
As per the election schedule released by the university, the election process will begin on February 24, the date on which the draft electoral roll is to be published. The draft will be published separately for all 19 constituent colleges and the headquarters-based postgraduate departments.
Objections would be invited against any anomaly in the draft electoral roll on February 25.
The same evening, the final electoral roll will be published after disposing off the objections. Nomination papers will be accepted on February 27 between 10 am and 3.00 pm. Scrutiny will be done the same day after the expiry of the nomination period.
Candidates can withdraw their nominations on February 28. Voting and counting of votes will be held on March 6. Voting will end at 3pm and the counting will begin half-an-hour after the polling process ends.
The election schedule has been made only for college and department-level office bearers. Neither the schedule, nor the methodology (direct or indirect) has been released for the election of the central-level (the entire university in which all registered students and research scholars participate) union election.
Asked about the election of the central union comprising all colleges and PG departments, registrar Sidnath Prasad Deen said, “It is for the committee constituted to decide the modalities of election to take a call in the matter.”
A sizeable number of students believe that with nine months of the academic year 2019-20 gone, the union elections have become virtually meaningless and it was no more than a ritual. In any case, only unit level elections are being held. Instead of holding election for only two months, the university must notify a permanent election calendar whereby elections are to be held immediately after the last date of admission, feel majority of the students.
