The Supreme Court on Monday entertained an appeal by NGO ‘
Allahabad Heritage Society’ challenging the UP government’s
October 18, 2018, decision to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj.
A bench of
Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices BR Gavai and
Surya Kant sought the state government’s response to the appeal filed by the NGO, which has challenged Allahabad HC’s February 26, 2019, order dismissing its PIL against renaming the city.
The petitioner said the Yogi government ignored settled norms for changing the name of a city and hurried through the process within five days of initiation of the proposal on October 13, 2018, without even conducting a survey to know the views of residents of the city.
