PATNA: The sword of freedom fighter, Veer Kunwar Singh, which had vanquished the British soldiers in the 1857 rebellion, will soon shine atop high platforms at four places in Bhojpur district.
The work on construction of the platforms, christened ‘Vijay Stambh’, is in progress and they are likely to be ready by the end of February. In the meantime, the authorities concerned are waiting for the arrival of consignment of the swords being cast at Jaipur in Rajasthan.
Bhojpur district magistrate (DM) Roshan Kushwaha told this newspaper that the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) had identified four places — Kayam Nagar, Bibiganj, Buzurg and Sheopur Ghat — where specially-designed swords of Veer Kunwar Singh would be displayed.

"The Vijay Stambh’ will be an epitome of the bravery of the great freedom fighter. It will also give a boost to tourism in Bhojpur,” the DM said.
He added, “According to historical texts, it was at Sheopur Ghat that Kunwar Singh drew his sword and cut off his hand after being injured by the bullets of the British Army. Hence, this place was chosen for one of the victory pillars.”
BSTDC’s executive engineer Ramashakar Prasad said, “The base of the 15-foot-high ‘Vijay Stambh’ will be 50 feet long and 50 feet wide. A 21-foot-long bronze sword will be installed on top of the pillar and the ground will have green grasses. The entire area will be protected by boundary walls.”
Shashikant Tripathi, a social activist of Kayam Nagar, claimed that a thick wall near a river in the village was believed to be part of the ruined camp of Kunwar Singh. “The new victory pillar is being built at a little distance from that site and will help attract tourists,” he said.
