‘A safe city for women’
Bangladesh Mahila Parishad yesterday said the new Dhaka city mayors, after being elected in the February 1 polls, must work towards making the capital a women-friendly city by ensuring their safety and security.
Speaking at a press conference at Jatiya Press Club, the Parishad leaders said women face various forms of violence in their everyday life due to lack of security.
To strengthen security measures, they urged the next city mayors to increase public transport facilities for women, make footpaths clean and pedestrian-friendly and provide sufficient hostel facilities for working women.
They also urged the Election Commission to ensure security of women before and after the polls, and called upon city dwellers not to vote for candidates involved in violence against women.
Dr Fauzia Moslem, acting president of the organisation, said civic rights are gradually deteriorating in the capital due to various mismanagement and irregularities. “Women have become the worst victim of that,” she added.
The upcoming city corporation polls are not only important for ensuring basic amenities, but also for making the capital more women-friendly, she added.
Mahila Parishad General Secretary Maleka Banu and Organising Secretary Umme Salma Begum also spoke at the programme, among others.
