NEW DELHI: Life turned topsy-turvy for a businessman based in south Delhi after crooks not only carried out fraudulent transactions from his credit card, but also sent him objectionable pictures of him and his friend stored on his Google drive.
The accused also blackmailed him with morphed pictures of his family members, asking him to transfer Rs 1 lakh to an anonymous account to not put the pictures online.
Three men, including the mastermind, have been arrested using the IP details of the devices of the accused provided by Google.
“The accused are Deepak alias Bittoo (19), Mohammad Ali (19) and Sanchit Saraswat (20). Ali is the mastermind of the gang and has earlier worked in a call centre,” said Atul Kumar Thakur, DCP (South).
Police said that Ali and Deepak were friends. The duo approached their third friend Saraswat who worked as a team leader with a firm. For just Rs 500, Saraswat allegedly provided an excel sheet with confidential data including credit card details, names and mobile numbers of people. The duo procured mobile numbers on fake addresses and started their own ‘call centre’ at Deepak’s house in outer Delhi.
The duo then allegedly started calling people from the list, impersonating executives of their target’s bank. They would gain access to target’s bank accounts and emails using his mobile number and the OTP. “In the current case, the accused ordered a gold chain for Rs 25,000 through an e-commerce website using the businessman’s bank details. The order was frozen as soon as we received the complaint,” DCP Thakur said.
The accused then allegedly accessed the victim’s Google drive and started threatening him with morphed pictures. The businessman was asked to send Rs 1 lakh to not leak the pictures.
