Sports briefs: Goal scoring Huskie goalie earns national award

Huskies goalies stole the show — and all the pucks — on the weekend with back-to-back shutouts for both Taran Kozun for the men and Jessica Vance for the women.

The icing on the cake came on Saturday night when Kozun also scored a goal into an empty net, and with that, outscored the Calgary Dinos for the weekend. He became just the second Canada West male goalie to accomplish the feat. Vance is now second all-time in Canada West women’s play with 20 career shutouts.

Both Huskie goalies were named Canada West first stars of the week for their efforts on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Kozun was also named the U-Sports male athlete of the week.

Seven Huskie teams have maintained their top-10 rankings in the latest U-Sports polls released on Tuesday. The top-ranked Huskie team is the women’s basketball team, which continues to be the No. 1 ranked team in the country. They are followed on the list by the men’s and women’s wrestling teams; each is ranked second. Men’s hockey are ranked third, men’s track and field in fifth and women’s in seventh. Also within the top 10 is the men’s basketball team, in eighth place nationally.

Sask. skips solid at curling junior nationals

Two Saskatchewan skips are putting up strong performances at the New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Langley, B.C.

Rylan Kleiter was tied atop the men’s standings at 5-1 heading into his Wednesday showdown with Prince Edward Island, one of the other leaders.

In the women’s event, Ashley Thevenot was 4-2 before a late draw against Quebec on Wednesday night. She was tied for fourth with three other curlers.

Preliminary play continues at both tournaments until Friday, with finals on Sunday.
