PUNE: A Solapur-based man was booked by the Dehu Road police on Wednesday after a woman complained that he had created a fake social media account of her teenage daughter and sent the girl’s morphed photographs to her family members.
The man was booked under Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and the relevant sections of the Information and Technology Act.
“The woman in her complaint allaged the man had created a fake account in her daughter’s name in October last year. He morphed the teenager’s photographs accessed after hacking into her original profile. He then sent obscene messages from the fake account,” an officer from the Dehu Road police station said.
The officer said the suspect had also sent some obscene messages and photographs to the complainant’s niece. “We have booked him for harassing two women,” he added.
Statistics released by the Pune police in recent years indicated that criminal offences involving misuse of popular social media sites accounted for 25% of the total cases of
cybercrime being dealt with by them.
