KOLKATA: Traffic came to a halt on
Kalighat Bridge around 7.30pm on Thursday when a
bus hit the newly constructed height barrier. The
KMDA officials put up
height barriers on both sides of the bride in the early hours of Thursday. The 45-year-old bridge connects Alipore with Kalighat over Tolly’s Nullah.
The KMDA engineers, who were alerted by the traffic control room about the incident, rushed to the spot and took stock of the damage.
Though it was a holiday, there was vehicular pressure on SP Mukherjee Road, Chetla Bridge and Durgapur Bridge due to the closure of the Kalighat Bridge.
Earlier, the bridge came under scanner for its poor health. The police and engineers, who were part of the height barrier installation, said that vehicles had to be diverted through other roads from 10pm on Wednesday to 5am on Thursday for the work.
