MULTAN: Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami staged a demonstration against unavailability of flour and price hike here on Friday.

The protesters led by JI Punjab secretary general Suhaib Ammar Siddiqui and Multan district ameer Dr Safdar Iqbal Hashmi staged the demonstration at Kutchery Chowk. They were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against hike in flour and sugar prices.

The protesters said that the government had failed to curb the price-hike and provide relief to the masses. They said that despite increase in power and gas tariffs, electricity and gas were not available to the people in the country. They said that the prices of petroleum products were gradually increasing in the country despite the declining trend in the global market.

Speaking on the occasion, JI Punjab secretary general Suhaib Ammar Siddiqui said that the poor people were hit by the growing inflation and the ‘anti-masses’ policies of the government. He said that the government had exported wheat in October last at low rates and now importing the same at extremely high rates. He demanded fresh elections in the country, saying that it was a viable solution to steer the country out of crises. JI Multan district ameer Dr Safdar Iqbal Hashmi said that Prime Minister Imran Khan had failed even fulfilling his single commitment made with people before the general elections. He said that Imran had promised creating job opportunities for more than 10 million youths, but he had unemployed 3.4 million people during the last 16 months. He said that Pakistani rupee had sharply devalued against currencies of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and India. He said that unavailability of flour and Roti in the agricultural country was incomprehensible.

Led by JI district ameer Azeem Randhawa, the rally emerged from Chiniot Bazaar and culminated at Chowk Clock Tower. The participants of the rally raised slogans against the government and expressed concern over the ignorance of the ruling party leaders about the sky-rocketing prices of essential items.

Addressing the rally, JI district ameer Azeem Randhawa said that the unprecedented price-hike, unemployment and exorbitant increase in gas and electricity tariffs had made the lives of people miserable. He said that the government had done nothing for providing relief to a common man during the last 15 months.
