VARANASI: A German man and his Turkish wife, who were vacationing in India and touring the countryside in their Caravan since November last year, had a harrowing experience a week ago in UP’s Jaunpur district where they were “bullied, harassed and attacked” by three bike-borne men.
Acting on an FIR lodged in Madiyahu police station on the complaint of Timothy Benjamin Hatton, a resident of Fliederweg in Germany, police arrested two of the assailants late on Thursday.
The third accused is on the run. Hatton and his wife Duyga Keskin Hatton entered India from Wagah and were on their way to Rishikesh from Varanasi when they were attacked on Badwa Road near Singarpur village in Jaunpur, where they had halted to catch up on sleep. The couple managed to wriggle out of the clutches of their attackers and drove down to the nearest police station at Madiyahu to narrate their ordeal.
According to the FIR, three men intercepted their vehicle around 8pm and began banging on the window panes of their Caravan. “I opened the door and three men tried to force their way into the vehicle while making obscene gestures. I stepped on the gas and sped towards the road, but unfortunately the railway crossing at Singarpur village was shut. While we were stranded near the tracks, the trio reached the spot and hurled stones at our Caravan. They also tried to pull me and my wife out of the vehicle. The goons fled when a crowd gathered near the boom barriers,” Timothy stated in his police complaint.
The two arrested have been identified as Nitin Yadav and Ramashankar Yadav, residents of Jaunpur. The third, Sachin Yadav, is on the run. The accused were charged with assault, voluntarily causing hurt and mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs 50.
Tourist back in Germany
Timothy told TOI he works as a translator and was on a tour of the subcontinent. He, however, refused to divulge details of the incident, saying he has returned to Germany and would not like to comment. The case was transferred to Barsathi police station. Inspector Munnaraj Dhusia said the two arrested men wre in jail.
