KCR unstoppable as TRS heads for landslide win in Telangana municipal elections

Decimating the opposition parties in the Municipal body elections, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is closing in towards yet another impressive one-sided victory.

Among 3,535 wards in urban local bodies which went to polls on January 22, TRS comfortably won over 1,600 wards replicating the party performance of the 2019 general elections where it secured 88 out of the 119 assembly segments, or even winning 101 seats in the 150 wards of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation polls in 2016.

As of 9 pm, when counting of votes was still underway, the state election commission website that the TRS had won 1,685 of the 2,968 wards where counting of votes was completed. Results of 567 wards were yet to be declared.

Congress came second with 569 wards, followed by the BJP in 292 wards. Meanwhile, Independents secured 246 wards., whereas, AIMIM won 87. The CPI and the CPM won 20 and 12 wards, respectively and TDP got 8 wards. ‘Others’ won 49 wards.

Celebrations had broken out at the party headquarters, Telangana Bhavan and across different parts of the state as early as 11.30 am. Supporters danced to the tunes of drum beats and smeared pink gulaal on each others face while hailing the chief minister KCR and party working president KT Rama Rao.

With the trends clearing showing a TRS landslide win, party working president KT Rama Rao tweeted Satuday afternoon: “My heartfelt gratitude to the people of Telangana for reposing faith in Sri KCR Garu’s leadership again & giving us a thumping victory in Municipal elections. Winning more than 100 plus municipalities out of 120 and all 9 out of 9 municipal corporations is no mean feat.”

Of the 120 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations that went to polls, TRS could manage a thunderous victory regardless of region, district or other socio-political equations.

As per estimates, TRS clinched 108 of the 120 municipalities, leaving Congress and BJP behind with 5 and 3 municipalities, respectively. Others have secured four municipalities.

While the TRS managed to win all seats in Bheemgal and Meripeda municipalities, in a large number of municipalities, the TRS has emerged first but not crossed the half-way mark.

Similarly, in the 9 municipal corporations where results were declared, the BJP came first winning in 28 of the 60 divisions in Nizamabad municipal corporation. TRS won 13 and MIM won 16 divisions, whereas, Congress could win only 2 divisions. In Ramagundem municipal corporation, the TRS emerged first winning 18 of the 50 divisions. Congress won 11 divisions, and BJP won 6. Independents won 6 divisions whereas, ‘others’ won 9 divisions.

AIMIM emerged victorious in Bhainsa and Jalpally municipalities. It secured 15 of the 26 wards in Bhainsa, and 15 of the 28 wards in Jalpally.

Final results were to be declared by 5 pm, after counting of votes started at 8 am.
