TRS set to clean sweep municipal elections in Telangana

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is set to sweep the municipal elections. Going by initial trends, TRS has won 238 wards and leading in over 1100 wards of total 2727 wards in 120 municipalities and nine municipal corporations. While Congress party got 55 wards and leading in another 300 wards, BJP secured 27 wards. AIMIM won seven wards including three in Bhainsa in Nirmal district.

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is set to sweep the municipal elections on Saturday. Going by initial trends, TRS has won 238 wards and leading in over 1,100 of the total 2,727 wards in 120 municipalities and nine municipal corporations. While Congress party secured 55 wards and is leading in another 300, the BJP secured 27. AIMIM won seven wards, including three in Bhainsa of Nirmal district.

In some municipalities such as Dornakal and Bheemgal, the ruling TRS has won all the 15 wards. The party has clear majority to secure chairperson posts in more than 40 places such as Wardhannapet, Maripeda, Gundla Pochampally and other places. Congress is giving tough fight to the TRS in some places like Suryapet and Dharmapuri. BJP is proving its strength in many urban local bodies especially in surrounding Ranga Reddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts. In Bhainsa municipality in all the 12 wards, the fight is between AIMIM and BJP.
Election authorities said the results of all the wards would be out by 1pm except some major municipal corporations.
Polling for the urban local bodies was held, except Karimnagar municipal corporation, on January 22. Of the total 2,979 wards in all the municipalities and corporation, counting has been taken up for 2,727 wards.
