Bruce Springsteen’s son chose firefighting over being an EMT in New York

Sam Springsteen may have been born to run into burning buildings, but the Boss’ son could have been racing in the streets of New York City in an ambulance.

The newly minted Jersey City firefighter took the civil-service exam in September 2015 to become a New York City EMT. He scored a 75 on the exam and was 497 on a waiting list of 1,359, not exactly the top of the Billboard charts.

However, Springsteen’s number came up in March 2017, and he could have signed up for the Big Apple gig, which pays $32,000 to start, according to the Department of Citywide Administrative Services.

Instead, he opted to take that ride, across the river to the Jersey side — for around $37,000.

“Even Springsteen knows, nobody wants to go to EMS,”  veteran FDNY member joked. “It’s probably a smart move. He’ll make a good living. And he’ll be home, a Jersey boy close to his dad,” he said.

Springsteen, 26, graduated from the Monmouth County Fire Academy in 2014 and served with his hometown Colts Neck Fire Department, the Long Branch Fire Department and the North Wildwood Fire Department, according to the Asbury Park Press.

He was sworn into the Jersey City Fire Department earlier this month.

Back in April, proud mama Patti Scialfa broke the news of Sam’s new gig on her Instagram story.

“You followed your dreams…JC firefighter… Stay safe .. love your brave heart,” Scialfa posted.

Bruce Springsteen’s old manager, Mike Appel, said the Boss told him several years ago that “straight-laced” Sam wasn’t blinded by the bright lights of show business. “Bruce was good with that. He’s live and let live,” Appel said.

Still, he was probably the only newbie Jersey City firefighter who received words of support from supermodel Christy Turlington, who posted emojis of hands clapping and actress Rita Wilson, who commented on pal Patti Scialfa’s Instagram, “Congratulations, Sam!!…We are lucky to have you out there serving the community.”
