Telangana: Couple drowns as car slips into canal

HYDERABAD: A couple drowned in Peddapalli district on Saturday evening after their car accidentally fell into Kakatiya canal. The deceased have been identified as M Srinivas (40), a businessman, and his wife M Swaroopa (38).
Peddapalli police said that the couple was travelling to their residence in Sultanabad and at around 5pm they stopped near the canal to buy fish from a vendor.When Srinivas tried to reverse the car, he applied the accelerator instead of brake and the car slipped into the canal.
Based on eyewitness account, Srinivas was speaking to his son on the phone while reversing the car. He managed to inform his son of the accident before communication was lost, Sultanabad police said, adding that the couple tried to open the windows, but they were jammed. The locals who saw the car sinking called up the police.
Meanwhile, the couple’s son rushed to the canal and found them submerged. The police rescue team managed to pull out the car from the canal and recover the bodies.
