Assembly polls 2020: 28 vie for New Delhi, just four to contest in Patel Nagar

NEW DELHI: With 28 valid nominations, the prestigious New Delhi assembly constituency has the highest number of candidates in the fray this year. The reserved constituency of Patel Nagar has just four candidates, which is lowest among all assembly seats.

Delhi election officials said 672 candidates, including 593 men and 79 women, have finally been left in the contest for 70 assembly seats, which is lowest since the first election of the reconstituted Delhi assembly held in 1993.

In 1993, 1,316 candidates had contested the poll, while the number decreased to 815 in 1998. In 2003, 817 contested the election, while 875 locked horns in 2008. The number marginally increased to 880 in 2013. In 2015, 673 candidates, including 66 women and a transgender, had contested the polls.

On Friday, election officials had said that there were 668 candidates this time, however, after the final computing the total number of contestants reduced to 672.
While Aam Aadmi Party is contesting on all 70 seats, BJP has fielded its candidates on 67 and left two constituencies for Janata Dal (United) and one for Lok Janshakti Party. Congress is contesting on 66 seats and its ally, Rashtriya Janata Dal, is in the fray on four. Bahujan Samaj Party has fielded candidates on 68 seats. There are 148 independent candidates fighting the polls this year.

This year, New Delhi assembly segment had witnessed a record number of 80 candidates filing their nominations. However, after the three-day scrutiny and withdrawal process, only 28 were left in contest, including two women.
With just four candidates in the fray — three men and a woman — the reserved constituency of Patel Nagar has the least number of aspirants, followed by Kasturba Nagar, Shakur Basti and Mundka with five each and Jangpura, Kalkaji, Rajendra Nagar, Bawana, Janakpuri, Ambedkar Nagar, Deoli, Mehrauli, Malviya Nagar, Seelmapur and Mangolpuri with six each.
Timarpur, Shahdara, Kalkaji and Sultanpur Majra have three women candidates each — the maximum number among all constituencies — contesting this time. There are 23 constituencies where no women have filed their papers this year.
The Delhi assembly elections will take place on February 8, while votes will be counted on February 11. The last date to file nominations was January 21 and candidates were allowed to withdraw their names till January 24.
