U.S.-based Algorand Foundation is set to develop a blockchain-powered platform for real-time Global Air Quality Monitoring in partnership with French blockchain start-up Planetwatch s.a.s.

The platform is claimed to be the world's first immutable air quality ledger utilizing the Algorand blockchain and Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies.

Apart from leveraging Algorand blockchain protocol, PlanetWatch platform will use advanced data acquisition software developed at European research organization CERN and high-performance air quality sensors.

The platform will store data gathered from air quality sensors to be installed around the world onto the Algorand blockchain, which is built on an open source, permissionless, pure proof-of-stake blockchain protocol.

The air quality data will be received from a global network of low-cost air quality sensors that will be installed by environmentally conscious people outside their homes or carry sensors while on the move. This crowd-sourced data will then be validated, filtered and displayed on the Internet and through a mobile application in real-time.

The validated data will be transcribed onto the Algorand blockchain to create an immutable air quality repository accessible to all participants. Sensor owners will also be rewarded with PLANET tokens in exchange for contributing air quality data to the repository.

The news comes close on the heels of the World Bank citing air pollution as the fourth largest health risk in the world. The current air quality monitoring methods are inadequate due to no real-time data reporting, which leads to delays in dangerous pollution detection for timely warnings.
