A set of traffic lights were wrecked after a car smashed into them.

The driver fell ill at the wheel of his car and crashed into the lights in the Chapel Ash area of Wolverhampton.

It caused disruption to motorists approaching the junction between Compton Road and the Tettenhall Road at 10.14am today, Monday January 27.

The unwell man was taken to the city's New Cross Hospital.

West Midlands Roads tweeted: "An earlier road traffic collision has struck and knocked off traffic signals at the Chapel Ash junction in Wolverhampton. Please approach with caution."

It is believed only one vehicle was involved in the collision.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We we called at 10.14am this morning (January 27) to a car in collision with a lamppost at the junction of Compton Road and Tettenhall Road.

"We sent  one ambulance to the scene and we treated one patient, a man, who crews were told had suffered a medical incident prior to the collision.

"Following treatment at the scene he was taken to New Cross Hospital."
