Conservatives call for recall of House of Commons’ health committee to address coronavirus

The Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) is calling on the government to recall the House of Commons’ health committee in response to coronavirus concerns.

The CPC says members of parliament must be briefed by health officials as soon as possible about Canada’s response to the outbreak.

In a statement released Monday evening, Shadow Minister of Health Matt Jeneroux said Canadians need all the facts and should have their questions answered.

“Canadians want to know what is being done at the border to ensure infected individuals are being identified, what is being done to help Canadians currently in China and what are the federal government’s responsibilities and next steps in addressing a potential outbreak,” he said.

A motion to have the Clerk of the House convene a meeting of the health committee by Wednesday received unanimous consent.

There is currently one confirmed case of coronavirus and one presumptive confirmed case in Canada, both in Toronto.
