About 5.3% of Louisiana workers were union members in 2019, up from 5% the year before, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The proportion represented by a union or an employee association similar to a union, who may not necessarily be members, was 6.1% last year compared to 5.8% in 2018.

The national average of wage and salaried workers who are union members was 10.3%, down from 10.5% in 2018, the BLS says.

BLS says eight states had union membership rates below 5% in 2019. South Carolina and North Carolina had the lowest rates (2.2% and 2.3%, respectively). The next lowest rates were in Texas and Virginia (4% each). Two states had union membership rates over 20% in 2019: Hawaii (23.5%) and New York (21%).
