Roadblock over arrests in Jalangi Murshidabad
Behrampore: Nabajagaran Manch — comprising supporters of anti-Trinamool and anti-BJP groups —– blocked Sagarpara-Sheikhpara state highway and Dhanirampur-Bhaduriapara roads at Sahebnagar in Murshidabad’s Jalangi on Thursday morning with bodies of the two persons killed in Wednesday’s violence.
This followed the arre-sts of Kanak Sheikh, Rafiqul Islam and Abul Kalam Basar.
“Two from our side died. But they arrested three of our supporters,” Manch leader Gulam Rahman Biswas said.
“We demand the arrest of Tahiruddin Mondal, the main accused.” Tahiruddin, TMC’s Jalangi block president, however, said: “What happened on Wednesday was nothing but a conspiracy to kill me.”
The blockade was lifted after senior police officers intervened.
Anarul Biswas (62) — the imam of a local mosque — and Salauddin Sheikh (17) were killed as violence raged during an anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act bandh. Trouble broke out between bandh enforcers from Manch and alleged TMC supporters. Though both sides oppose CAA, TMC opposed the bandh on the ground that a shutdown was unnecessary on Saraswati Puja.
Murshidabad SP Ajit Singh Yadav said: “Two FIRs have been lodged over Wednesday’s violence. We have arrested three, including two named in an FIR. Raids are on to nab more suspects.”
