Batham, a history-sheeter, sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case and out on bail, had invited the children on the pretext of a birthday party of his daughter and held them hostage at his home in Kathariya village of the district, triggering panic and anger among locals. They laid siege to his house and informed police even as Batham lobbed crude bombs on the crowd and fired eight rounds, said ADG law & order PV Ramashastry.

Drones were used to facilitate the rescue operations while television channels were told not to broadcast live feed from the spot.
A local resident, Anupam Dubey, who tried to negotiate with Batham was fired upon and took a bullet in his right foot. “Batham alleged villagers had raped his wife while he was serving imprisonment and they openly made derogatory remarks about her character,” he said.
‘Freed 10-month-old at midnight’
“I pleaded with him to release the children, but he insisted on calling the DM and local MLA to register a case against all those who misbehaved with his family during his absence,” he said. At midnight, Batham finally released a 10-month-old girl and demanded a house for his family under PM Awas Yojana to free the remaining kids.
BJP MLA from Farrukhabad, Sunil Dutt Dwivedi, told TOI, “The criminal started firing when locals tried to open the door, hitting one in the leg. He also hurled a bomb, injuring SHO Mohammadabad.” Talking to reporters in Lucknow, DGP OP Singh said police acted with caution to ensure safety of children. “Our priority was to rescue the children and end the hostage crisis without collateral damage,” he said. Addressing a press conference at the chief minister’s house at 1.40am on Friday, DGP O P Singh said, “IG Kanpur range Mohit Agarwal spearheaded the operation and his team has been rewarded Rs 10 lakh by chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who was monitoring the operations since 8pm.”
