PATNA: The convoy of former JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was attacked in Saran district on Saturday. Two of the vehicles in his convoy were damaged when a group of unidentified people pelted stones near Kopa Chatti village under Kopa police station around 12.30pm. Windscreens of the vehicles were also smashed in the incident.
Kanhaiya, who is spearheading an anti-CAA-NRC yatra from Bhitiharwa Ashram in West Champaran in the state, was on way to Chhapra to address a public meeting.
There were altogether 12 vehicles in the CPI leader’s convoy. The yatra is to conclude at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan on February 29.
Chhapra Sadar SDPO Ajay Kumar said a man travelling in the convoy received minor injuries in his hands. The police team, which was assigned to escort Kanhaiya, intervened and chased the attackers, who were shouting pro-CAA slogans. The SDPO said Kanhaiya escaped unhurt in the incident. A complaint was lodged in connection with the incident, he added.
Earlier, Ajay Singh, husband of JD(U) MP from Siwan, Kavita Singh, was detained at Dahiawa Tola as a precautionary measure. Singh, who had unsuccessfully contested assembly byelection from Daraundha in Siwan district last year, is considered to be a potential threat for Kanhaiya on his political turf.
Later, Kanhaiya addressed the public gathering at Hawai Adda Maidan in Chhapra where he assailed the Narendra Modi government for making certain amendments to the citizenship Act. Kanhaiya also urged Bihar CM Nitish Kumar to pass a resolution in the state assembly against the CAA and NRC to uphold the secular outlook and fabric of the county.
Earlier, Kanhaiya was greeted with ‘Go back, Kanhaiya’ slogans in Gopalganj where he had gone to address a public meeting as part of his ‘Save the Constitution Yatra’ launched from Champaran. On Friday, he was in Siwan from where he had left for Chhapra. On Saturday, he later went to Muzaffarpur to address another meeting against CAA-NRC.
