AGRA: Farrukhabad hostagetaker and murder convict, Subhash Batham, was a historysheeter as per police records. There were four FIRs, including theft and assaulting a Dalit, against his name. But, he was never suspected by local intelligence unit (LIU) or Mohammadabad police of making bombs.
The police said the "illiterate" man watched YouTube videos on bomb-making and kidnapping of children.
On Sunday, superintendent of police, Anil Kumar Mishra, Farrukhabad, said, "Neither Subhash nor his wife were social. The couple secretively constructed a 'bunker' with ill intentions which no one was aware of. They were jointly responsible for the [children] hostage situation.
When their neighbours were unaware, then how could the police know about it?" According to Farrukhabad district police, a total of 145 crude bombs, including a cylinder bomb and a canned bomb along with wire, battery, tape, sutali (thread), 20 live cartridges, 11 used cartridges and one each 315 bore country-made rifle and pistol were recovered, but no one could sniff or had any idea from where he collected such a large quantity of weapons and explosive powder.
Subhash, who had arranged a fake birthday party for his oneyear-old daughter and then held more than 20 children as hostage at Kathariya village in Farrukhabad, was shot dead by police after nearly a 10-hour standoff. Angry locals later reportedly beat his wife to death.
"Around one-and-a-half months ago, Subhash was released from jail after being arrested by SOG team in a theft case. Scanning through mobile phone history recovered from his home revealed that he watched YouTube videos on bomb-making and kidnapping of children. Though, he was illiterate," said special operation group, Farrukhabad in-charge Dinesh Kumar Gautam. While LIU in-charge, Preeti Singh said, "LIU had no idea about his ammo stock or from where he gathered the explosives."
