MYSURU: The sudden rise in the mercury levels has created a summer-like feeling in Myuru and Kodagu. The maximum temperature in these two districts have been more than 4 degrees celsius above normal.
On Saturday, temperature touched 34.5 degrees Celsius in Mysuru and 31.9 degrees Celsius in Kodagu. The average temperature for February is 31.1 degrees celsius in Mysuru and 28.2 degrees celsius in Kodagu.
Saturday's was the second highest temperature for February in Kodagu in the past 10 years, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) data.
The all-time record for February registered in Kodagu is 32.1 degrees Celsius in 2005 and 2016.
The temperature is expected to rise further with the IMD predicting clear sky over Mysuru and Kodagu in the next one week. Experts observe that South Interior Karnataka will witness frequent heatwaves this summer. KSNDMC director G Srinivasa Reddy attributed the rising temperature to the increased sea surface temperature in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. "The winter has vanished. It is the starting point of summer. So naturally, there is an increase in temperature. Temperature increase has become a global phenomenon," he said.
However, variations in temperature are causing rain in many places. "Rainfall is expected in the Malnad region due to soaring temperature," said Reddy.
