ED attaches Bhagalpur gangster’s property worth Rs8cr
BHAGALPPUR/PATNA: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday attached movable and immovable property valued at Rs 8.38 crore of notorious gangster Jai Prakash Mandal and his close relatives under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PLMA), 2002.
ED sources said the central agency initiated the probe into the ill-gotten property of Mandal on the recommendation of EOU, which was created to carry out investigation into the wealth of people amassed through unlawful means.
Mandal is a resident of Naya Tola under the Industrial police station area in Bhagalpur district.
Altogether 12 FIRs related to loot, extortion, dacoity and gambling were lodged against Mandal, which prompted the ED to initiate investigation into illegal wealth in his name and also of his close relatives. Chargesheets were also filed in seven cases for contravention of various sections of IPC and Gambling Act.
The attached property included 45% part of Sri Ram Valley (includes flats, commercial area, parking area) at Mauza Fatehpur, Bhagalpur, worth Rs 4.07 crore, Shree Shopee Mart at Bhagalpur worth Rs 2.25 crore, land and structural part of JP Ratna Filling Station (HP Petrol Pump) in Bhagalpur worth Rs 7 lakh, two residential houses in the name of his wife Ratna Devi in Bhagalpur worth Rs 48 lakh, 37 landed property of Mandal, his wife and son Pravin Mandal worth Rs 1.25 crore.
The list of the property confiscated by the ED also included six vehicles valued at Rs 20.56 lakh and bank deposits worth Rs 1.96 crore. The ED claimed that the accused amassed movable and immovable property to the tune of Rs 8.38 crore in the name of his wife and son, mostly through cash transactions.
A senior official of the central financial probe agency said, “The accused have also diverted the land acquired out of proceeds of crime into various projects like marketing complexes in the name of Shoppe Mart, development of high-rise buildings with a developer, petrol pumps and residential buildings.”

ADG, EOU, Jitendra Singh Gangwar said the state police have launched a major crackdown against the criminals who have accumulated property through unlawful means. “The crackdown will continue in future,” he said and urged the people to inform the EOU about such anti-socials without any fear from them.
The ADG made it clear that the identity of the people sharing information about such anti-socials would be kept secret.
