Liquor worth Rs 1.23 crore seized in Araria

ARARIA: The excise officials with the help of local police seized about 12,356 litres of India made foreign liquor (IMFL) of over Rs1.23 crore from four trucks near Haria Bara toll Plaza situated on Araria-Forbesganj NH-57 on Monday. The trucks were coming from West Bengal. Three truck drivers were arrested.
Police sources said the huge quantity of IMFL was being taken to Samastipur.
The trucks had Punjab registration numbers.
Araria SDPO K D Singh said a truck was intercepted on a tip-off. “The driver was arrested and he revealed that three more trucks full of IMFL with Punjab registration numbers were parked in the same area,” the SDPO said.
Araria excise superintendent Ashutosh Kumar said three trucks parked near a dhaba at Araria Zero Mile were seized.
The arrested drivers were identified as Prem Singh and Jagdip Singh from Dugri police station area under Ludhiana district and Guruprit Singh from Sahnewal police station area in Punjab. They did not disclose the names of the kingpin.
According to excise and police sources, around 69,00 criminal cases have been registered under different sections of Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act 2016, in which about around 8,000 offenders have been arrested so far. Besides, 25,000 litres of IMFL and around 15,000 litres of country-made liquor have been seized in the district till date.
Araria DM Baidyanath Yadav also admitted that the neighbouring areas in West Bengal have become a hub for smuggling liquor in Bihar and four police constables will be deployed near Jahanpur toll plaza under Jokihat on NH-327 E as the vehicles carrying liquor mostly pass through that route.
