PATNA: Former JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar’s convoy was attacked allegedly by CAA/NRC supporters at Mallik Chowk under Sadar police station area in Supaul town on Wednesday evening.
He was on way to address an anti-CAA/NRC meeting at Sisauni under Kishanpur police station area in the district before going to Saharsa. Kanhaiya has launched his yatra against CAA from Bhitiharwa Ashram in East Champaran on January 30.
The yatra will culminate at Patna Gandhi Maidan on February 29.
Sadar police station SHO Sandeep Kumar Singh said Kanhaiya’s convoy slowed down due to heavy crowd in the busy market when some locals, who were said to be pro-CAA/NRC, started raising slogans against the CPI leader. However, police ensured that the convoy moved forward safely,” he said, adding that Kanhaiya wanted to divert route to address a meeting at a nearby place. But he was denied as he had no prior permission to address any gathering there.
The SHO said when almost all the cars in his convoy passed, someone threw stones on a pickup van with banner of anti-CAA/NRC slogans. Singh said there were at least 13 cars and more than 40 bikes in Kanahiya’s convoy. “The windshield of the van was shattered and the driver was injured. The convoy was later escorted up to the border of Saharsa district,” he said, adding no written complaint had been received by police.
