PATNA: A 50-year-old person died as his country-made pistol went off during the marriage ceremony of his niece at Markama village under Sikandara police station area in Jamui district on Tuesday night.
The deceased, identified as Mahfooz Miyan, had come from Kolkata to attend his niece’s wedding. He was a native of Roh village in Nawada district but had shifted to Kolkata around five years ago.

Sikandara police station SHO Raj Vardhan Kumar said Mahfooz had a gunshot injury in lower part of his abdomen. “The place of injury suggests that he had a country-made pistol which went off,” he said, adding that one empty cartridge was recovered from the spot. He said the incident took place around 4pm and police was informed around 6pm.
He said Mahfooz’s relative Mohammad Javed lodged an FIR on Wednesday against two named and other unknown persons alleging that they came and killed him during marriage. “But no one in the village told the police that who killed Mahfooz. Generally anger is reflected among people or relative of a murdered person and they tell everything to police in such situation. But there was nothing like that in the village,” he said, adding police suspect that Mahfooz got killed in accidental firing by himself.
The SHO said Mahfooz was initially rushed to Sadar hospital from where he was referred to PMCH. “The injured person was on the way to Patna in an ambulance when he succumbed to his injuries while crossing Barbigha in Sheikhpura,” SHO Kumar said, adding police received information about his death around 11pm on Tuesday.
The SHO said that body was handed over to family after conducting post mortem on Wednesday. “Further investigation were going on in connection with the incident,” he said.
