LUCKNOW: Seven persons, including a two-year-old boy, died allegedly after inhaling poisonous gas near a chemical factory in Sitapur's Lalpur village in the early hours of Thursday. An FIR has been registered against the owner of the chemical factory under charges of murder. Five villages in the vicinity have also been cordoned off, while NDRF teams were at the spot for further investigation.

The deceased, including five of family, were all from Kanpur. They worked in a carpet factory and lived on the premises. The chemical factory is next to the carpet factory. Police suspect the seven persons to have inhaled fumes that could have come from a substance that spilled out of a delivery tanker on Wednesday night.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has announced ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and instructed administration to take tough action in the case.
Villages cordoned off, forensic team’s probe on
The villagers reported the deaths to the police on Thursday morning after they found two dead stray dogs and a foul smell across the village.
“Villagers told us that two trucks were carrying a chemical to the factory when some chemical from a drum spilled out on the ground. The deceased were sleeping in their makeshift house nearby and the resultant poisonous gas caused the tragedy,” Sitapur DIG LR Kumar said.
The officer added that five villages in the vicinity have been cordoned off for isolation. A combing operation is on in nearby areas. A team from the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) and health department have also reached the site for rescue and investigation.

Kumar said that an FIR under charges of murder had been registered against Pranav Gupta, the owner of the chemical factory. “A team of forensic investigators is conducting tests at the spot while postmortem examination reports of the deceased are awaited,” he said.
Meanwhile, all district officials have been instructed by the CM to help the families of those killed in the incident.
“A detailed investigation will be conducted and the people responsible for it will face consequences. Necessary legal action will be taken,” the notice added. Compensation for victims has already been declared.
