Delhi Assembly Election Voting Day LIVE: Sharp Drop In Delhi's Turnout vs 2015, Half-Way Into Polling

Delhi is voting today for its 70-member assembly as over 1.47 crore voters face the choice of re-electing the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government or replacing it with the BJP or the Congress.

As of 2 pm, the voter turnout was recorded at 27.9 per cent, a huge 14 per cent drop since 2015.

A low voter turnout could be a cause of worry for the Aam Aadmi Party, whose 2015 landslide victory was based significantly on a high voter turnout.

Delhi Assembly Election Voting Day LIVE: Arvind Kejriwal's Son Pulkit, A 1st Time Voter, Casts His Vote

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was among the early voters to vote as polling took place for Delhi's 70 assembly seats today. Mr Kejriwal voted along with his family members, including his son - a first-time voter, at a polling booth in the Civil Lines area.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener, who is contesting for a third term from the New Delhi Assembly constituency, said he is hopeful that the people of Delhi will vote based on the work done by his government.

"Voted along with my family, including my first-time voter son. Urge all young voters to come out to vote. Your participation strengthens democracy," Mr Kejriwal tweeted, sharing photo of his family members after casting vote.

Mr Kejriwal's son, Pulkit, said he felt good about voting, news agency PTI reported. Asked if his father will be Chief Minister again, Pulkit said, cautiously, that "whoever people choose will become the chief minister of Delhi".

In the 2015 assembly polls, the AAP won 54.3 per cent of the vote share as it went on to win 67 seats, while the BJP got 32 per cent and the Congress managed just 9.6 per cent.

The turnout of women could be the make-or-break factor in deciding which party wins these elections. In the 2015 polls, in the top 20 constituencies with the highest turnout of women, AAP won much more decisively than in the constituencies which had the lowest turnout of women. In the seats with a high turnout of women voters, the AAP's margin of victory was 5 per cent higher than in the seats where women's turnout was low.

Delhi Assembly Election Voting Day LIVE: "#AntiWomenKejriwal," Alleges Smriti Irani Over His Election Day Tweet

Union Minister Smriti Irani on Saturday attacked Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over a tweet in which he urged women to come out in large numbers and vote in the assembly election.

"Definitely go and vote. A special appeal to all women, just as you take up the responsibility of the home, the responsibility of the nation and Delhi is with you. All of you women must go to vote and take the men in your families along with you. Discuss with men who it is who it right to vote for," Mr Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi minutes before 8 am when the polling began.

It was the "discuss with men" advice that Ms Irani, the Minister of Women and Child Development, objected to. While supporters of Mr Kejriwal said that Chief Minister was appealing women to encourage men to vote for his party, the BJP leader alleged that the tweet had a misogynistic slant.

"Do you not consider women capable enough to decide for themselves who to vote for?" Ms Irani said in Hindi with a hashtag "#AntiWomenKejriwal".

Around 1.47 crore people in the national capital have the choice on Saturday to elect a new government in what appears to be a close contest between a Mr Kejriwal's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The election comes at a time when the country and Delhi have been rocked by weeks-long protests against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), perceived as discriminatory towards Muslims.

The BJP has sought to mobilise popular sentiment against the protests, at the heart of which is an indefinite sit-in led by women in South East Delhi's Shaheen Bagh, banking on its support base.

For the AAP, the outcome of the election hinges on the turnout of women. In the 2015 polls, in the top 20 constituencies in Delhi with the highest turnout of women, the AAP won much more decisively than in the seats which had the lowest turnout of women.

The surge had helped the AAP scoop up an astonishing 67 of 70 seats in 2015 while the BJP won just three. Since then, the AAP has conceded one seat to the BJP in a by-poll and lost six lawmakers who joined other parties.

Votes for the Delhi assembly election will be counted on Tuesday.

Delhi Assembly Election Voting Day LIVE: Candidate Alka Lamba's Slap Starts Congress-AAP Fight At Polling Station

A fight between Congress and Aam Aadmi Party workers broke out outside a polling booth in north Delhi's Majnu Ka Tilla today after the Congress's Alka Lamba tried to slap an AAP worker.

In a mobile video, a man who reportedly belongs to the party led by Arvind Kejriwal is heard shouting at Ms Lamba, who suddenly lunges with her right hand raised high to slap him. The man moves back and Ms Lamba misses her target.

Within seconds, the man is escorted away by a ring of policemen. However, Congress workers chase and surround the policemen. Ms Lamba and some Congress workers are seen trying frantically to reach the man, who is still shielded by the policemen.

Ms Lamba, a former MLA of the Aam Aadmi Party or AAP from Chandni Chowk, fell out from the party after disagreements with Mr Kejriwal on party matters accumulated to a point that they had to go separate ways.

She joined the Congress in October last year. Ms Lamba worked with the Congress for 20 years before she quit the party and joined the AAP. She won the Delhi election in 2015 from Chandni Chowk.

On September 19, Ms Lamba was disqualified from the Delhi assembly by Speaker Ram Niwas Goel for defection.

Over 1.47 crore voters face the choice of re-electing the AAP or replacing it with the BJP or the Congress. The polling marks the end of a bitter face-off that saw exceptionally coarse language and communally-charged attacks.

Tight security arrangements are in place across the national capital with extra vigil in south-east Delhi's Shaheen Bagh, where a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act is going on, and other sensitive areas.

The Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 years before being decimated by the AAP, has led a relatively lacklustre campaign. The party's top leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have barely campaigned for its candidates.

In the 2015 assembly polls, the AAP had won 54.3 per cent of the vote, while the BJP got 32 per cent and the Congress managed just 9.6 per cent. While the AAP won 67 seats in 2015, since then the party has conceded one seat to the BJP in a bypoll and six of its lawmakers have been disqualified over joining other parties.

The results of the Delhi election will be out on Tuesday.

Delhi Election 2020: Congress Maintains Legacy Of Fielding Most Female Candidates

Since the first Assembly election of Delhi in 1993, among all the major political parties in the fray, the Congress has a record of fielding maximum females and 2020 was no exception. The BJP, however, took the credit of fielding most females in 2015, according to the data made available by the Election Commission.

In the 1993 Assembly election, out of the total 59 women in the fray, Congress gave eight females, the highest from a political party. The BJP, on the other hand, named only four females for the fight. While two from the Congress were elected, one from BJP made up to the House. In the 1998 Assembly election, again, the Congress fielded double the number of females in the poll battle when compared to the BJP. While the BJP named five females, the grand old party had 10 female candidates to offer out of the total 57 females in the fray.

In the next Assembly election in 2003, while the Congress has named 12 women candidates, the BJP had only six women in the fray out of the total 78 females contestants. This time, seven Congress women candidates were elected to the House. The data about the females fielded by each party was not available for the 2008 Assembly elections. However, there were a total of 81 females in the fray, with three from Congress being elected to the House.

In the 2013 Assembly elections, not just the Congress and BJP but the Aam Aadmi Party was also in the fight. While the Congress and AAP fielded six females each, the BJP named only five females. However, there were three females elected to the Assembly and all were from the AAP. The 2015 Assembly election was an exception as the BJP had fielded most females among the political parties. The BJP had eight females, while the AAP fielded six and the Congress named only five. All six from the AAP made it to the House, while none from Congress and BJP were elected. There were a total of 66 female contestants.

In 2020, the Congress has again taken a lead in fielding the most females in the fray, followed by AAP. There are a total of 79 females in the fight. Among the big names from the Congress are former MLAs Krishna Tirath and Alka Lamba. Aam Aadmi Party has fielded its failed Lok Sabha candidate Atishi, along with Rakhi Birla and Bandana Kumari aiming for hat-trick in the Assembly.
