Delhi Election Results Highlights: AAP sweeps polls with 62 seats

    Synopsis

Arvind Kejriwal led the Aam Aadmi Party almost replicated the AAP's fairy-tale victory of 2015 by riding on his government's development agenda, and in the process emerged as a key leader in the national political landscape.

As predicted by exit polls, AAP is heading towards a huge win in Delhi
In almost a clean sweep, Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) created history second time in a row with victory on 62 seats in Delhi Assembly elections. The magnitude of AAP's sweep kept the BJP to single digits and prevented the Congress from opening its account. BJP, which fought a spirited battle against the ruling party to come back to power after two decades, improved its tally marginally to 8 seats from its 2015's tally of 3 seats. The victory comes nearly eight months after it suffered a severe drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls in which the party drew a blank while the BJP won all the seven seats.

Here are the major highlights of the Delhi poll results:
    • Kejriwal to meet LG today, calls meeting of MLA-elect
    • AAP's Bhupinder Singh Joon wins from Bijwasan by lowest margin of 753 votes
    • Among the largest margins - AAP's Sanjeev Jha won by more than 88,000 votes defeating JDU's Shailendra Kumar who got 51,440 votes. Jha secured 139598 or 62.81 per cent votes.
    • Modi congratulates Kejriwal. In his response, Kejriwal said he wishes to make Delhi a world class city. "Thank u so much, sir. I look forward to working closely with Centre to make our capital city into a truly world class city," he tweeted.
    • Eight turncoats fielded by AAP win, and one by BJP won; rebel leader Kapil Mishra loses in Model Town.
    • Eight of the nine women candidates fielded by the AAP won.
    • Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra offers his resign from the post
    • BJP failed to make much impact in constituencies where its leaders made controversial remarks while targeting their opponents during campaigning. Only three seats, which were among 12 constituencies where Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed rallies, were bagged by the BJP.
    • AAP candidates sweep the five Muslims dominated seats, repeating its 2015 performance in Delhi.
    • Congress's performance touched a record low as the party bagged less than 5% of the total votes polled and 63 of its candidates lost their deposits.
    • As AAP swept the Delhi Assembly polls, the party gave hints of taking its politics at the national level.
