Delhi election results 2020: Here are the highlights

#1. Hailing AAP’s sweeping victory, Chief Minister Kejriwal said a new kind of politics has emerged from the Delhi Assembly polls with people rewarding the party which built schools, hospitals and provided cheap electricity round-the-clock. “I love you,” Kejriwal said in a brief address to joyous supporters and party workers at the AAP’s headquarters in the national capital. Kejriwal, who contested from the New Delhi constituency, defeated BJP’s Sunil Kumar Yadav by over 21,000 votes. Later, he visited the famous Hanuman temple near Connaught Place along with his family and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

#2. Delhi Deputy CM Sisodia staved off a strong challenge from the BJP, wresting the Patparganj seat in final rounds of counting. Sisodia, who has been credited with improving infrastructure in government schools, had been trailing against BJP candidate Ravinder Singh Negi until the tenth round of counting. #3. Conceding defeat, Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari congratulated Kejriwal for his resounding victory and also expressed his gratitude to BJP cadres for their hardwork. Meanwhile, Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra resigned from his post, taking moral responsibility for the party’s debacle in the Assembly polls. Read more here.

#4. Among the prominent AAP candidates that won the elections aside from Kejriwal and Sisodia include Amanatullah Khan from Okhla, Raghav Chadha from Rajinder Nagar, Atishi from Kalkaji, Satyendar Jain from Shakur Basti, and Gopal Rai from Babarpur.

The victory of Amanatullah in Okhla constituency assumes significance as Shaheen Bagh and Jamia Nagar, which became the epicentre of protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Act, fall under his constituency. Seelampur, which also witnessed violence during an anti-CAA protest, saw AAP’s Abdul Rehman emerging victorious against Kaushal Kumar Mishra of the BJP. Rehman defeated his rival by a margin of 25,000 votes. BJP had focused its campaign around Shaheen Bagh, where protests against the new citizenship law have been on for almost two months now. Even in his first election rally in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the Shaheen Bagh protests a “design” to destroy amity in the country.

#6. A look at the latest EC data reveals that AAP has managed to almost hold on to its vote share. AAP has received 53.58 per cent of the total votes counted so far as against 54 per cent in 2015. BJP has increased its vote share to 38.50 per cent from 32 per cent. BJP’s vote share had surged to 56 per cent in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Although the BJP managed to improve its vote share to over 38 percent, the increase did not materialise in sufficient number of seats to bring the party back to power after a gap of over two decades. Among the 8 seats BJP won include Badarpur, Gandhinagar, Ghonda, Karawal Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Rohini, Rohtas Nagar and Vishwas Nagar.

#8. Lt Governor Anil Baijal has dissolved the Delhi Assembly. “Lt Governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday dissolved the Sixth Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from February 11,” a statement said. “A new order will be issued for the formation of the Seventh Legislative Assembly after the final results come,” it said.

#9. The Aam Aadmi Party has emerged victorious on all the 12 seats reserved for SC candidates in the high-stakes Delhi Assembly polls, with the minimum victory margin being almost 12,000 votes.

#10. Opposition leaders hailed the Kejriwal-led AAP landslide win in the Delhi assembly polls as a defeat of the politics of polarisation and hate and a victory of inclusive politics, and said “winds of change” are blowing in the country. With Kejriwal set to become the chief minister of Delhi for the third straight term, leaders of non-BJP parties cutting across party lines said the poll outcome showed that elections can be fought and won on the development plank. There was also a call for all regional parties to come together to keep the BJP out of power.
