PATNA: Enraged over his elder sister’s intercaste marriage, a 20-year-old youth shot dead his two-year-old niece and critically injured his sister in Kaimur district on Wednesday evening.
The victim, Santoshi Devi (22), is battling for her life in a trauma centre in Varanasi. The assailant, Chakra Sen, a resident of Madurna village under the Chainpur police station area in Kaimur district, is absconding after the incident.
The incident took place around 5.30 pm at Okhra Chowk under the Chainpur police station area when Santoshi along with her minor daughter was returning home from Chainpur market.
Chakra accosted his sister and fired at her. The bullet hit the minor girl who died on the spot. Chakra then pumped a bullet into Santoshi’s body and fled the spot on his motorbike. “The assailant left the site of occurrence in a huff thinking that she might have died,” Chainpur police station SHO Santosh Kumar told this newspaper on Thursday.
The injured was rushed to the local primary health centre from where she was referred to Varanasi, where her condition is stated to be critical. “She is undergoing treatment at a trauma centre. We are trying our level-best to save her life,” the SHO said adding that the accused is at large.
In her statement, Santoshi said that her younger brother was not happy with her marriage to Birju Kushwaha, who is from a different caste. “He had earlier threatened me with dire consequences. My husband is a resident of the same village, which I belong,” the SHO quoted the survivor as saying.
Santoshi, who owns a beauty parlour at Chainpur Bazaar, used to return home after closing her shop everyday. “On finding her alone at a deserted place, Chakra fired at her causing grievous injuries and killing her minor daughter. While the girl died on the spot, her mother is struggling for her life in the hospital,” the SHO added.
Earlier, Kaimur SP Dilnawaz Ahmad said raids have been intensified to arrest the accused.
