PATNA: Top police officials came under attack of Union minister and Begusarai MP Giriraj Singh on Friday for their failure to control crime in the district.
The minister, a firebrand ‘Hindutva’ leader, spoke to Begusarai SP Awakash Kumar over phone on Friday, asking him to pull up his socks. Apparently upset over a spurt in crime, Giriraj said, “Tell the CM that either the people of Begusarai will vacate the district or I will tender my resignation.”
His remarks on the deteriorating law and order situation came on the sidelines of his visit to Phulwaria village, which witnessed three murders within a fortnight.
After meeting the bereaved family members of a student, who was killed recently, Giriraj told the SP over phone, “You are an honest officer, but that does not mean everything is fine under your jurisdiction.”
Casting aspersions on police for working hand in glove with anti-social elements, the BJP MP said, “I came to know that police are more interested in picking up close relatives of the victims than initiating action against the accused. Even women are not being spared and summoned to police stations at night in violation of the prescribed rules.”
Giriraj also claimed that there was no fear of police among the criminals. “The situation can be gauged from the fact that three people were killed in Phulwaria alone in a fortnight. What is happening in the district?” he asked.
A transporter, Ravindra Rai and the student of a private school, Prince, were among those killed in the district recently. The Union minister also talked to DGP Gupteshwar Pandey over phone and sought his intervention in controlling crime in the district.
Later, a video depicting the conversation between the minister and the SP vent viral on social media. The SP, however, refused to make any comment on the issue. A DSP-rank officer posted in Begusarai, said, “This is not the way to talk to any IPS officer (read SP). He (Giriraj) is doing so to take political mileage and nothing else.”
