TIRUPATI: Young delegates dominated the sessions at the 38th annual meeting of the Astronomical Society of India (ASI). 53% of delegates are students and another 23% are postdoctoral fellows and young researchers, who converged on Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER Tirupati) campus here on Friday for the national event.
ASI President G.C. Anupama, a senior professor at Indian Institute of Astrophysics (Bengaluru), said the largest meet of astronomers would discuss emerging areas of space science.

Speaking to the media here on Friday, she said the plenary sessions would discuss galaxies, cosmology, compact objects like black holes and futuere of payload and space missions.
ASI Secretary Divya Oberai said scientific deliberations would be held in the morning sessions IISER Director K.N. Ganesh said the institute had grown up in stature to host such a major national event and appreciated the turnout from local institutions such as IIT Tirupati, NARL and SV University. Even on the gender front, the event is encouraging as 113 of the 322 delegates are female participants, said ASI's Working Group on Gender Equity (WGGE) member Harvinder Kaur.
The day witnessed a special lecture on 'The central problem of star formation: Why so slow?' by Prof. Neal J. Evans from University of Austin at Texas. Interestingly, a public talk on 'Chandrayaan-2' is slated for Saturday under the theme 'India's expanding lunar exploration program' by ISRO's Director of Space Science Program P. Sreekumar.
Similarly, Sunday will witness a special lecture on 'Black hole with Event Horizon Telescope' by Eduardo Ros of Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, Bonn. A four-day Teachers Training Camp for exposure to astronomy will begin on Feb 18, jointly organised by IISER Tirupati and ASI's Public Outreach Education Committee (POEC), announced POEC nominee Preeti Kharb.
