BEGUSARAI: Begusarai SP Awakash Kumar on Sunday refuted the allegations levelled by Union minister Giriraj Singh on Begusarai police.
Giriraj, in a video grab, which went viral on Saturday, had accused the SP of providing shelter to anti-socials. “Only the SP being honest was not enough as his junior police officials were protecting the criminals,” alleged the minister. His remarks came during his visit to Phulwaria under his constituency on Friday.
The minister, who had had gone to meet the bereaved family members of a man killed in an accident, had also accused police of harassing the relatives of the victim instead of nabbing the guilty.
Awakash, a 2012 batch IPS officer, while addressing mediapersons in Begusarai on Sunday said that if he (Giriraj) had any proof, he should disclose the names of the criminals who were allegedly being provided shelter by the police. “If he doesn’t find it fit for giving the names of the criminals to us, he may share the same with my seniors,” the SP said, adding that it would help the police initiate action against the outlaws.
He also said that the minister had called him on Friday to discuss the law and order situation in the district. “I responded his queries with facts available with the district police. During the conversation I didn’t realize that he was angry with me or raised questions at policing in the district. But later a video went viral on social media quoting the minister that the SP had to face the wrath of the minister,” the SP clarified.
The SP said the minister had questioned the death of Prince whom his family members claimed to have been murdered. “The postmortem report, however, indicated that Prince was killed in a road accident and was not murdered as claimed by his relatives. Police investigation is based on scientific evidences,” the SP said.
It was not the first occasion when the minister had criticized the Begusarai police for their failure to control crime.
