School board delays approval of tennis courts construction

T-R PHOTO BY JANINE ERMAN “Superintendent Theron Schutte tells the board about bids submitted for the proposed tennis project.

The decision to approve the bid for the Marshalltown High School Racquet Facility was tabled until a special March 24 meeting.

During the regular Marshalltown School District meeting on Monday, the decision was unanimously made by all board members.

The school district, on Feb. 6, received bids from three companies for the project. The base bids were:

• Garling Construction, $775,000

• Woodruff Construction, $969,730

• Burkett Construction, $971,500.

Superintendent Theron Schutte said the delay is in light of the city of Marshalltown reconsidering the partnership on the project.

“We would anticipate the city would take action on whether to approve this as one of their projects in the near future at their March 23 regular city council meeting,” he said. “So we tentatively would be claiming . . . a special board meeting for the purpose of acting on these bids on March 24.”

Schutte told the board that the base bids came in higher than the district’s projected base bid of $705,648.

However, some of the alternate bids submitted by Garling were less than what was projected by the district. For example, the projected cost of the parking lot by the school was $234,470 and the Garling bid was $175,000.

“Without partnership we’d likely be solely recommending the construction of the six courts,” Schutte said.

In October, the Marshalltown City Council voted against borrowing $300,000 to help the Marshalltown School District build the proposed tennis courts.
