Ben Affleck has admitted that his 'biggest regret' is divorcing ex-wife Jennifer Garner.

The 47-year-old Hollywood actor has opened up about his battle with sobriety that led to a very public divorce from actress Jennifer, 47.

Reflecting on mistakes made in his private life, Ben told The New York Times that "the biggest regret of my life is this divorce.”

He continued to speak about the shame of what he had done at certain times in his life.

Ben revealed: "Shame is really toxic. There is no positive byproduct of shame. It’s just stewing in a toxic, hideous feeling of low self-worth and self-loathing.”

The Batman actor opened up about the effect his alcohol intake had on his life.

He continued: “I drank relatively normally for a long time.

"What happened was that I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart.

"This was 2015, 2016. My drinking, of course, created more marital problems."

Ben and Jennifer announced they were separating in June 2015 but it took until October 2018 before their divorce was settled.

They had started dating in 2004 and married less than a year later, having three children - daughters Violet, 14, and Seraphina, 11, and son Samuel, seven - in the process.

Reflective Ben admitted that speaking about the dark times in his life can be counterproductive as it was 'not a good place to dwell in'.

He said: "It’s not particularly healthy for me to obsess over the failures - the relapses - and beat myself up.

“I have certainly made mistakes. I have certainly done things that I regret. But you’ve got to pick yourself up, learn from it, learn some more, try to move forward.”

Ben had had a chequered history with rehab and he entered there again in August 2018, just before his divorce was finalised.

Two months later and he broke his silence about his situation in an emotional statement on Instagam.

He wrote at the time: "This week I completed a forty-day stay at a treatment center for alcohol addiction and remain in outpatient care.

“Battling any addiction is a lifelong and difficult struggle. Because of that, one is never really in or out of treatment. It is a full-time commitment. I am fighting for myself and my family.”

Unfortunately, Ben suffered another setback in October 2019 after he relapsed and appeared 'publicly inebriated'.

The actor is back on the big screen in The Way Back, which opens in the US on March 6.
