Alpine-themed city centre bar Antler has been renovated and converted to an American-style sports bar after less than two years.

The venue at Newcastle’s 55 Degrees North has undergone a multimillion pound renovation after being bought by the High Street Group last summer.

Antler and its sister restaurant The Fat Buddha went into administration in August 2019 and were saved by new owners.

Fat Buddha has since been transformed into lavish cocktail bar and pan-Asian restaurant The Purple Peacock.

And now Antler has been refurbished and is reopening to the public as Bar 52 - "Budweiser's spiritual home in the North East".

The High Street Group says it has signed an "exclusive three year partnership" with the the global drinks giant.

Officially launching on Saturday, February 29, its owners say Bar 52 will be "the ultimate destination for all live sport and entertainment from around the world, while providing the party atmosphere that sports fans can only dream of".

High Street Hospitality said: "The ultimate compliment of beers, burgers and unrivalled entertainment will be on offer to ensure party-loving locals will be flocking to the venue.

"Alongside cocktail masterclasses, karaoke booth and party games which customers will be enticed into, it’s sure to be a hit with the region’s stags and hens.

"Hot Wing Roulette will put your taste buds to the test, while their Big Daddy Burger and the Diva plank is set to tackle even the bravest and most adventurous foodies among us."

High Street Group Chairman, Gary Forrest, said: “Launching Bar 52 in Newcastle is the start of a very exciting year for the group. Our vision is the venue will become the hub of all sports and entertainment in the city centre. The region has a fantastic sporting heritage, hosting many live events throughout the year and we hope that Bar 52 can be at the heart of that moving forward.”

High Street Hospitality has a roster of over 28 venues, including hotels and restaurants across the North East.

Antler launched in June 2018 and was opened by skiing legend Eddie the Eagle.

Administrators were called in to Fat Buddha and Antler – both based at 55 Degrees North on Pilgrim Street – just over a year later.

Gary Hutchinson, the former Sunderland AFC commercial director and head of Club Wembley, bought the bar from former owner Bob Senior in 2017 as the first focus for his firm Chrysalis Leisure, and then formed a a joint venture with London investors called PAGH Ventures to run the operation, ploughing £750,000 into a massive transformation of the venue which was unveiled in June 2018.

However, joint administrators Steve Ross and Matthew Higgins of RSM Restructuring Advisory LLP, who were appointed Joint Administrators of Fat Buddha Newcastle Limited and PAGH Newcastle Limited, sold the two bar and restaurant operations in a pre-pack deal which saved 40 local jobs.
