The South Dakota Soil Health Coalition recently gave out two awards honoring individuals for their soil health work.

Kurt and Kathy Stiefvater of Salem, S.D., received SDSHC’s 2020 Legacy Award.

The Stiefvaters received the award in recognition of the commitment they have made to practicing soil health management and stewardship on their farm. Kurt and Kathy actively advocate for agriculture and for improving soil health through numerous organizations in their local community and across the state. They have shared their knowledge regarding practices such as no-till, cover crops, livestock integration and much more, greatly impacting those they meet.

Also, the Stiefvaters have hosted SDSHC’s Soil Health School on their farm for the past several years. The school provides participants with the opportunity to experience a working soil health system and learn from the hosts’ soil health journey.

The Legacy Award was created to honor the late Al Miron, a founding board member of SDSHC. Miron, of Crooks, S.D., dedicated his personal and professional life to agriculture and was a dedicated advocate for improving soil health.

Receiving an honorary Legacy Award in Miron’s memory this year was his wife, Joan, and two of their adult children, James and Jennifer.

Friend of Soil Health award

SDSHC also awarded the 2020 Friend of Soil Health award to Jay Fuhrer of Bismarck, N.D. He was selected as this year’s recipient because of the impact he has had in the area of resource conservation and education.

Fuhrer recently retired after many years of service with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service — North Dakota where he mentored countless producers, USDA employees and industry partners. His expertise and leadership has contributed to the success of SDSHC Soil Health School and many other outreach events throughout the region.
