A quirky new wine bar is opening in Digbeth. After a series of successful wine pop-ups, 'purveyors of the finest natural wines' Wine Freedom will open its first permanent bar in April.

The new bar will be housed in the currently empty W.J. Wild building on Floodgate Street,  a couple of doors down from The Engine Room events venue.

The proposed 2,5000 sq ft bar will include a 'big wall of wine' which customers will walk past before entering the main bar area.

Warwickshire based Wine Freedom has become renowned for sourcing organic, biodynamic handcrafted wine with little or no chemicals.

It won the AA Wine List of the Year 2019 after working alongside Hampton Manor in Solihull to develop the wine offering at the hotel's Michelin starred Peels' restaurant.

AA judges praised their "super impressive list that is wonderfully curated. Features include funky producers... Amazing, very stylish and one that takes you on a journey and story."

Wine Freedom co-founder Sam Olive told BirminghamLive: "We're very excited to be opening a permanent venue in Digbeth. It will be a multi functional space - a wine shop, bar, event space and kitchen.

"Obviously serving organic, natural wine will be the focus - but we want to create an interactive experience where wine education is at the heart of it.

"And without any stuffiness or intimidating jargon. It's about making learning about wine fun and accessible."

Wine Freedom wines come with quirky and down to earth descriptions such as "delicate and perfumed...the opposite of everything crap about Aussie Reds." Another wine is described: "A really nice and gentle intro into orange wine. Plus the label looks quite nice."

As well as offering a wide variety of organic wines, the 70 cover venue will serve food - with various chefs taking a monthly residency in the venue kitchen.

Sam added: "Our bar will be a comfortable relaxing environment where people can learn about wine and enjoy good food and drink in nice surroundings."

"We are a fairly well established brand and have supplied wines to lots of places in Birmingham including Michelin starred eateries  -  the plan is to serve a specially curated food menu to complement our wines rather than the usual cheese and ham plates you might expect."

Wine Freedom has previously held pop-ups at Dig Brew Company, Caneat Café, The Plough, Kilder.

The bar will join Digbeth's thriving food and drink scene which includes The Ruin, Digbeth Dining Club, The Old Crown pub and Baked In Brick.
