Sheffield has been chosen as one of the host cities for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 Championship.

Some of Europe’s best female footballers will head to the Steel City with Bramall Lane set to host four matches during the competition which starts in July next year.

The home of Sheffield United will be used for three group stage games on July 10, 14 and 18 as well as a semi-final on July 27.

The tournament will kick off on July 7 at Old Trafford with England set to play the opening match in front of what is expected to be a record breaking crowd for a UEFA Women’s EURO match.

The final will be held at Wembley Stadium on August 1 with the London arena set to host back-to-back men’s and women’s European Championship finals in 2020 and 2021.

With 500 days to go until kick off, excitement is already building ahead of the tournament and Councillor Mary Lea, who is the cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council, hopes the matches in Sheffield will inspire a new generation of players.

She said: "As we mark 500 days to go until the UEFA Women's EURO 2021, we are thrilled that Sheffield has been awarded three group games and an exciting semi-final all taking place at Bramall Lane.
